What Does Lorem Ipsum Mean?
Lorem Ipsum comes from the Latin phrase "dolorem ipsum," which means "pain itself." It is taken from a philosophical work by the Roman author Cicero called "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. The modern placeholder version is a scrambled, altered excerpt that no longer reads as coherent Latin.
The full original passage is from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero's work. The Latin professor Richard McClintock at Hampden-Sydney College traced the origin of the text in detail, identifying the source passage and confirming that Lorem Ipsum has roots in classical literature over 2,000 years old.
The reason it has remained the standard is simple: unlike "content here, content here," Lorem Ipsum has a natural distribution of letters, spaces, and punctuation. It mimics the visual texture of real language without carrying any meaning that could distract a reviewer from evaluating the layout.
Where Does Lorem Ipsum Come From?
The modern use of Lorem Ipsum as a design placeholder began in the 1960s. Letraset, a company that produced dry-transfer lettering sheets used by designers and advertisers, used a scrambled version of the Cicero passage to create filler text for their Body Type sheets. Designers would apply these sheets to their boards to show clients how a layout would look before typesetting the real content.
The text became even more widely used in the 1990s and 2000s when desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker and later Adobe InDesign included Lorem Ipsum as their default placeholder text. Any designer using those programs encountered it automatically. From there it spread across the web, appearing in website templates, themes, and CMS platforms worldwide.

Why Do Designers Use Lorem Ipsum?
