Duplicate Word Remover: Delete Repeated Words, Lines and Sentences

A duplicate word remover scans your text and deletes any word, line or sentence that appears more than once, keeping the first occurrence. The WritoryBuzz tool works in three modes, shows you exactly what was removed, highlights duplicates in your original text and gives a word-frequency table. It runs in your browser, so your text is not sent to a server.

Remove your duplicates now or keep reading to choose the right mode, understand case rules and avoid the common traps.

What Is a Duplicate Word Remover?

A duplicate word remover is a tool that finds repeated items in a block of text and removes the extras. It keeps one copy of each unique word, line or sentence in the order it first appeared, so the cleaned result is a tidy list with no repeats.

It is mostly used to clean lists: keywords, tags, email addresses, CSV values and log entries. It can also tidy prose that was assembled from several sources, though for ordinary writing you should be careful, as the limits section explains.

How to Use the Duplicate Word Remover

  1. 1
STEP 1 Paste your text in the Your text box, or load a Quick example such as a keyword list, tags, CSV values, duplicate lines or a prose paragraph.
  2. 2
STEP 2 Choose a mode: Remove Duplicate Words, Remove Duplicate Lines or Remove Duplicate Sentences.
  3. 3
STEP 3 Set your options. Case-insensitive, Trim whitespace, Remove blank lines, Highlight duplicates in input.
  4. 4
STEP 4 Pick a sort order. Preserve order, A to Z, Z to A, by frequency (most first) or by length (shortest first).
  5. 5
STEP 5 Click Remove Duplicates. The cleaned text appears, along with what was removed and the number of duplicates found.
  6. 6
STEP 6 Check the frequency table to see which items were repeated most.
  7. 7
STEP 7 Copy the cleaned result.
Expert tip

Use "Highlight duplicates in input" first on important data. Seeing the marked duplicates lets you check the tool is removing exactly what you expect before you overwrite anything.

The Three Deduplication Modes

ModeWhat counts as a duplicateBest for
Duplicate WordsA whitespace-separated word that appeared earlierKeyword lists, tag lists, word lists
Duplicate LinesA line identical to an earlier lineCSV columns, email lists, log files
Duplicate SentencesA sentence ending in . ? or ! that matches an earlier oneText pasted from many sources, FAQ lists

A worked example

Input: "apple mango apple banana Mango". With Duplicate Words and case-insensitive on, the output is "apple mango banana". The first apple and the first mango stay, with their original casing, and the later apple and Mango go to the removed list. With case-insensitive off, the result is "apple mango banana Mango", because Mango and mango are different tokens.

Case Sensitive or Insensitive?

Case-insensitive mode is on by default. In that mode Apple and apple count as the same item, the first one stays in its original casing and the rest are removed. This suits ordinary text, keyword lists and tag lists, where capital letters carry no meaning.

Turn it off when case matters: code identifiers, CSV headers or data where USD and usd mean different things. Then Apple and apple are kept as two separate items.

Use Cases

SEO keyword lists

Merging exports from Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs or Semrush leaves many repeats. Paste the merged list and remove them in one step. Then check the final list with the keyword density checker.

PPC campaigns

De-duplicate keywords before importing them, so you do not bid on the same term twice.

Email and contact lists

One address per line, use Duplicate Lines and Case-insensitive.

Tags and categories

CMS tag lists grow duplicates as different people add "SEO", "seo" and "Seo".

Log files

Reduce thousands of repeated error lines to a short list of unique events.

Content assembly

Remove repeated sentences when you paste from several drafts.

CSV columns

Find the unique values in a column before a database import.

Why the Frequency Table Helps

The tool also ranks every item by how many times it appeared. That is useful beyond cleaning. In a keyword list, the most repeated terms show where your research overlaps. In a log, the most frequent line is usually the problem to fix first. In a tag list, repeated near-duplicates point to naming rules you need to agree on. In a set of sentences, repeated lines reveal boilerplate copied across sources.

Other Ways to Remove Duplicates

MethodHow it worksTrade-off
This toolPaste text, choose a mode, clickWorks on words, lines and sentences, shows what was removed
Excel or Google SheetsData, then Remove Duplicates on a columnNeeds a spreadsheet and works on cells, not words inside text
Command linesort -u file.txt, or sort then uniq. uniq alone removes only adjacent repeatsFast, but you must use a terminal and order changes
CodePython: list(dict.fromkeys(items)) keeps orderBest for repeat jobs inside an app

If you want to compare two lists, not clean one, use the text compare tool.

How It Works Under the Hood

The live tool splits your text into tokens, using whitespace for words, line breaks for lines and sentence-ending punctuation for sentences. It checks each token against a JavaScript Set of items already seen. A token not in the Set is kept and recorded, and a token already in the Set is dropped and logged in the removed list. Because lookups in a Set take constant time, the page states the method scales to very large inputs, up to hundreds of thousands of words.

Common Mistakes

  • Running word mode on normal writing. Prose often repeats words on purpose ("the", "and", "that that"), so word mode will break sentences. Use it on lists.
  • Forgetting punctuation. Because words are split on spaces, "apple," with a comma may count as different from "apple". Remove commas first, or paste one item per line and use Line mode.
  • Leaving case-insensitive on for case-sensitive data. Code and some IDs need case to stay different.
  • Not checking the removed list. Always glance at it before you delete the original.
  • Confusing this with a duplicate content checker. It removes repeats inside one block of text. It does not compare your page against other pages on the web.
  • Losing the original. Keep a copy of the source text until you have checked the result.

Limits of This Tool

  • It matches items exactly after trimming and optional lowercasing. It does not catch near-duplicates such as "color" and "colour" or plural forms.
  • It does not understand grammar, so word mode can leave text that reads badly.
  • The first occurrence wins. It does not choose the best version of a duplicate.
  • It is not a plagiarism or duplicate-page checker.

Privacy

All processing runs in your browser. The live page states that no text is sent to a server, logged or stored. That makes it reasonable for private lists, though you should still avoid pasting data you are not allowed to share into any web tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a duplicate word remover?

It is a tool that scans text and removes any word, line or sentence that appears more than once, keeping the first occurrence. It is mostly used for keyword lists, tags, CSV values and logs.

How do I remove duplicate lines?

Paste your list with one item per line, choose Remove Duplicate Lines and click Remove Duplicates. Each unique line stays once, in its original order unless you choose a sort.

Does it keep the first or the last copy?

It keeps the first occurrence of each item, with its original capitalisation, and removes later copies.

Is the removal case-sensitive?

By default it is case-insensitive, so Apple and apple count as duplicates. Turn that option off when capital letters matter, such as in code or IDs.

Can I remove duplicate keywords from an SEO list?

Yes. Paste the merged list of keywords with one per line and use Remove Duplicate Lines. For single words in a row, use Remove Duplicate Words.

Can I see what was removed?

Yes. The tool lists the removed items, shows how many duplicates it found and can highlight duplicates in your original text before you remove them.

Why did "apple" and "apple," both stay?

Words are split on whitespace, so a comma attached to a word may make it a different token. Remove the punctuation first, or use one item per line and Line mode.

Can I sort the cleaned list?

Yes. Choose Preserve order, A to Z, Z to A, by frequency (most first) or by length (shortest first).

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The live page states the tool runs in your browser and does not send, log or store your text.

Is this the same as a plagiarism or duplicate content checker?

No. It removes repeats inside the text you paste. It does not compare your text with other pages or sources. Remove duplicates from your text Want to see the length of your cleaned list? Check it with the word counter.
