Answer Engine Optimization

What Is an AEO Readiness Checker?

An AEO readiness checker is a free tool that scores your page against the signals AI answer engines use when deciding which content to cite in a generated answer. It returns a score out of 100 across content structure, keywords, E-E-A-T, and schema, plus a prioritised list of fixes to improve your AI visibility.

When someone asks a question in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews, the engine does not pull a random link. It looks for pages that are clearly structured, credible, and easy to lift a direct answer from. An AEO checker tells you whether your page clears that bar before you publish.

The tool above checks 15 signals across four categories: content structure, keyword optimisation, E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness), and schema readiness. Unlike a traditional SEO audit built around backlinks and authority, an AEO check focuses on content extractability, how easily a model can pull a clean, trustworthy answer from your page and attribute it to you.

Why It Matters

Why AEO Matters More Than Ever in 2026

Search behaviour has shifted faster in the last two years than in the previous decade. ChatGPT now serves around 900 million weekly active users and crossed one billion monthly app users in mid 2026. Google AI Overviews reach more than two billion people a month. Perplexity has grown past 45 million monthly users. Roughly 37 percent of people now start a search with an AI tool rather than a traditional engine. That is a huge share of intent that often ends without a single click to a website.

If your content is not structured for AI citation, you are absent from those answers. You can rank on page one of Google and still never appear in the AI response a growing share of users read instead. Here is why it is worth acting now.

  • Zero-click behaviour is rising. A large share of searches now end inside the results page or an AI answer. Being cited means your brand is seen even when nobody visits your site.
  • AI-referred visitors arrive pre-qualified. They have already read an answer that mentioned or recommended you, so they convert better than cold traffic.
  • First-mover advantage is real. Most sites have not seriously optimised for AEO yet. Doing it now builds citation authority before competitors catch up.
  • The signals overlap with good SEO. Everything that makes a page AEO-ready also tends to help it in traditional search, so you are not choosing one over the other.

The key idea: AI engines do not just crawl your site, they parse it, extract meaning, and judge whether it is worth quoting. A page can rank on Google and still fail that judgment. AEO is about closing that gap.

Inside The Score

What Does This AEO Checker Measure?

The tool checks 15 signals grouped into four categories. Here is what each covers and why it moves your AI visibility score.

Content structure (5 signals)

AI engines extract answers from well-organised pages. This checks for a clear H2 and H3 hierarchy, question-based headings that match how people ask, a FAQ section, bullet or numbered lists, and short paragraphs. Structure is the highest-impact category in the whole audit. Fixing it alone moves your score noticeably.

Keyword optimisation (4 signals)

Even in AI search, keyword placement still signals what a page is about. This checks whether your target keyword appears in the title or H1, in the opening paragraph, and in at least one H2, plus keyword density. The healthy range is 0.5 to 2.5 percent. Below that the page lacks focus, above it the content reads as stuffed and looks less trustworthy to AI systems.

E-E-A-T signals (5 signals)

Google's E-E-A-T framework is its main content-quality benchmark, and AI engines apply the same logic when choosing what to cite. This checks for author attribution, a published or updated date, statistics with sources, external references, and concrete examples. Pages that show genuine expertise get cited far more often than pages that only repeat keywords.

AI and schema readiness (4 signals)

This covers the technical signals AI engines reward. It checks whether your opening paragraph gives a direct answer or definition (the single strongest AEO signal), whether the page reaches a useful depth of 800 words or more, whether JSON-LD schema is present, and specifically whether FAQ or HowTo structured data is in place. Those Q&A and step formats no longer produce Google rich results, but they still help AI systems parse and quote your answers accurately.

How to Improve Your AEO Score: 8 Fixes That Work

Once you have run your content and seen which signals fail, these are the highest-impact changes. Start at the top and work down.

Fix 1: Start with a direct answer

Open with a 2 to 3 sentence paragraph that directly answers the main question your page covers. Write it as if someone asked "What is [your keyword]?" and you had 30 seconds to reply. This block is what AI engines pull most often. It is the single highest-impact AEO fix on this list.

Fix 2: Rewrite headings as questions

Turn generic headings like "Key Benefits" into "What are the key benefits of AEO?" AI engines match user intent to question-format headings far more reliably than to descriptive ones. Converting even two or three H2s makes a measurable difference.

Fix 3: Add a FAQ section

A FAQ block adds natural question-and-answer structure that AI engines love to extract, and it gives you a clean place to add FAQPage schema. Together these two changes drive more score gains than almost anything else.

Fix 4: Add schema markup

Structured data tells engines exactly what your content is. FAQ and HowTo schema no longer trigger Google rich results, but they still help AI systems read and quote structured answers, and Article schema is a strong baseline for every page. Use our free Schema Markup Generator to build valid JSON-LD in about two minutes.

Fix 5: Add author attribution and a date

Put a visible byline near the top and include a published or updated date. These address the Experience and Trustworthiness parts of E-E-A-T directly. AI engines are trained on the same quality signals Google uses, and fresh, attributed content gets cited more often than anonymous, undated pages.

Fix 6: Include at least one sourced statistic

Specific, sourced numbers are a clear signal of factual authority. Even one well-placed data point with a clear attribution improves how AI systems rate your credibility. One or two per section is plenty.

Fix 7: Use bullet points and numbered lists

Models extract structured information more reliably than dense prose. Whenever you have three or more related points, make them a list. This is especially effective for comparisons, feature lists, and step-by-step guides.

Fix 8: Break up long paragraphs

Long blocks are hard to extract cleanly. Aim for under 80 words per paragraph and split anything longer than five or six sentences. Short paragraphs also read better for humans, so this helps your bounce rate and your AEO score at once.

AEO vs SEO

AEO vs SEO: What Is the Difference?

AEO and SEO are complementary, not competing. AEO builds on the foundation of good SEO. The difference is the outcome you optimise for.

FactorTraditional SEOAEO
Primary goalRank in blue-link resultsBe cited in AI answers
Key metricKeyword ranking positionCitation frequency in AI answers
Content formatLong-form, keyword-richAnswer-first, question-structured
Schema roleModerateHigh, for machine readability
E-E-A-T signalsImportantCritical
Heading formatKeyword-focusedQuestion-based preferred
Paragraph lengthFlexibleShort, under 80 words preferred

The good news is that a page optimised well for AEO almost always performs better in traditional search too. Clear structure, strong E-E-A-T, proper schema, and answer-first writing are things Google rewards in both formats. You are not doing extra work, you are doing the same work more thoughtfully.

Reading Your Result

What Is a Good AEO Score?

The tool scores your content 0 to 100 based on how many of the 15 signals your page passes. Here is how to read your result.

A
85 to 100
Excellent. Your content is well-structured for AI citation. Focus on freshness and building topical authority.
B
70 to 84
Good foundation. A few targeted fixes, usually schema or a direct opening answer, push you into the top tier.
C
55 to 69
Visible to AI engines but missing key signals. Prioritise the direct answer, question headings, and a FAQ section.
D
40 to 54
Unlikely to be cited regularly. Several critical signals are missing and the content needs restructuring.
F
Under 40
Not AI-ready. The content needs a full rewrite using an answer-first, question-structured approach with schema.
AEO and GEO

Are AEO and GEO the Same Thing?

AEO and GEO are used interchangeably in 2026 and are closely related. The difference is scope. AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) covers all answer-capable surfaces, including voice assistants and featured snippets as well as AI chatbots. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) refers specifically to generative platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini.

In practice the signals for both are almost identical. A page that scores well for AEO readiness is also well-positioned for GEO, because the structure, E-E-A-T, and schema requirements overlap. This checker covers the signals that matter for both, so you do not need separate tools or strategies.

FAQ

AEO Readiness Checker FAQ

What does an AEO readiness checker measure?+
An AEO readiness checker analyses your page against the structural, semantic, and technical signals AI answer engines use when choosing content to cite. It looks at content structure such as headings, FAQ sections, and lists; keyword placement; E-E-A-T signals such as author, dates, and statistics; and schema markup. It scores how extractable and authoritative your content appears to AI systems, then gives you specific fixes.
Is this AEO checker free?+
Yes, completely free with no account, no signup, and no usage limits. The tool runs entirely in your browser and does not send your content anywhere. Paste your text or HTML, enter your keyword, and get your score instantly.
How is AEO different from traditional SEO?+
Traditional SEO optimises for ranking in blue-link results through backlinks, keywords, and authority. AEO optimises for being cited in AI-generated answers through content structure, answer-first writing, schema, and E-E-A-T. They are complementary. Improving AEO readiness usually improves traditional SEO at the same time, because the quality signals overlap heavily.
What is a good AEO score?+
A score of 85 or above means your content is well-optimised for AI citation. Between 70 and 84 is solid with room for targeted improvements. Below 55 suggests several key signals are missing and the page is unlikely to be cited regularly. The most common issues behind low scores are a missing direct answer in the opening paragraph and no schema markup on the page.
Does improving my AEO score help Google rankings?+
Not as a named ranking factor, but yes in practice. The things that lift your AEO score, including strong E-E-A-T, clear structure, proper schema, and comprehensive answers, are the same things Google's quality systems reward. Most site owners who improve AEO readiness see gains in both AI citation frequency and organic rankings.
What schema types matter most for AEO?+
Article or BlogPosting schema is a solid baseline for every content page. FAQ and HowTo structured data still help AI engines parse question-and-answer and step content, even though Google retired their visual rich results. Use our free Schema Markup Generator to create valid JSON-LD for any of these types without writing code, then validate it with Google's Rich Results Test.
How often should I check AEO readiness?+
Run a check whenever you publish a new page or significantly update an existing one. For a full review, check your top 10 to 15 pages by traffic once a quarter. AI search is evolving quickly in 2026, so tracking your AEO score is becoming as routine as monitoring keyword rankings.
Can I paste HTML source into the checker?+
Yes. Switch to HTML mode with the toggle above the text box, then paste your full page source. The tool strips the tags, reads the heading structure, detects schema, and checks all 15 signals against both the visible content and the technical elements. This gives a more complete picture than plain text for pages that already have schema and headings in place.
