Autosave

Every keystroke is saved in your browser a moment later.

Notes as tabs

Keep many notes, pin the important ones and label them with a colour.

Export anywhere

Download a note as TXT, Markdown, HTML or PDF.

Private by design

Notes stay on your device and are never uploaded.

Quick answer
Start typing in the notepad above. There is nothing to install and nothing to save by hand.

Key Takeaways

  • Notes autosave in your browser as you type, so there is no sign-up and nothing to save by hand.
  • Notes never leave your device. That keeps them private, but they do not sync between devices.
  • Clearing site data or using a private window can delete notes, so download a backup of anything important.
  • Export any note as TXT, Markdown, HTML or PDF, or back up every note in one file.
  • Do not keep passwords or banking details in a browser notepad. Use a password manager instead.

Write Notes Online With No Login or Sign-Up

Open the page and the cursor is already waiting. There is no account to create, no email to confirm and no app to download. That makes this free notepad online the quickest place to jot down a phone number, paste a snippet, draft a message or sort out a list before it goes somewhere else.

Autosave runs a moment after you stop typing. Close the tab, shut the laptop or lose your connection, and the text is still there when you come back on the same browser.

What Is an Online Notepad?

An online notepad is a plain text editor that runs in a web browser. You type into a blank page and the text is saved for you, usually inside the browser itself. It works like the notepad program on a computer, except that you open it from a web address on any device.

It is different from a full notes app. Apps such as OneNote or Google Keep keep your notes on a provider's servers, tie them to an account and sync them across devices. A browser notepad skips all of that in exchange for speed and privacy.

How to Use This Free Online Notepad

  1. 1
STEP 1 Click into the text area and start typing. The first note is created for you.
  2. 2
STEP 2 Give the note a title, or open a new tab with the plus button to start another note.
  3. 3
STEP 3 Watch the live word and character count at the bottom to stay inside a limit.
  4. 4
STEP 4 Use find and replace, font size and dark mode from the toolbar when you need them.
  5. 5
STEP 5 Open the Download menu to save the note as TXT, Markdown, HTML or PDF, or copy it into another app.

Where Are My Notes Saved? How to Avoid Losing Them

Your notes are saved in your browser's own storage on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, which is why the notepad needs no login. It also means the notes belong to one browser on one device.

Browser storage is reliable for everyday use, but it is not a vault. Browsers delete it in a few specific situations, and it helps to know them before they catch you out.

What happensAre your notes lost?
You close the tab or the browserNo. Notes are still there when you return.
You restart the computerNo.
You clear cookies and site data in browser settingsYes. Site storage is removed along with it.
You write in a private or incognito windowYes. The data is deleted when the last private tab closes.
Safari has no visit from you for seven daysPossibly. Safari can delete script-created data from sites you have not used.
The device runs very low on storagePossibly. Browsers remove the least recently used sites first.
You open the notepad in another browser or deviceNotes are not visible there. Each browser keeps separate storage.

The private window and cleared-data rows are the ones that catch people. We recommend three habits: never write anything important in a private window, download a backup after a long session, and keep the Backup all notes file somewhere safe.

Expert Tip

Download a backup before you clear your browser history or switch to a new computer. Select Backup all notes, then choose Import on the other side and every note comes back with its title and colour.

Writing something you cannot afford to lose? Open the Download menu and save a copy now.

Save Notepad Text as a TXT File or PDF

Every note can leave the browser in four formats. TXT is plain text that opens in any editor. Markdown keeps simple formatting marks for blogs and documentation. HTML suits web pages. PDF is the one to send or print, since it looks the same on every device.

To convert text to PDF, write or paste your text, open Download and choose PDF. The file is built on your device, so nothing is uploaded. If you already have a .txt file, import it first and then export it as a PDF. That is a quick text file to PDF converter with no sign-up. The PDF uses a standard Latin font, so emoji and non-Latin scripts are replaced with a question mark. Use TXT to keep every character.

If you need notes on your phone and laptop at once, an account-based app is the better tool. If you want to write something right now without handing over an email address, a browser notepad wins.

Looking for Notepad++ Online?

Notepad++ is a desktop program for Windows, so there is no official online version. For quick plain text and code snippets, this notepad covers the basics: plain text, find and replace, and no formatting added to what you paste.

Plain Text Notes: Strip Hidden Formatting From Pasted Text

Text copied from Word, a web page or an email often carries hidden fonts, colours and spacing. Paste it into a plain text notepad and all of that is removed, leaving only the words. Copy it out again and it takes on the style of wherever you paste it next.

This is why many writers use a notepad as a clean-up stop between apps. Once the text is clean, check its length with our word counter. To see what changed between two versions, use the text compare tool.

What People Use an Online Notepad For

  • Students taking quick lecture notes and counting words toward an essay limit.
  • Writers drafting headlines, captions and outlines before moving them into a document.
  • Developers parking logs, commands and code snippets that do not belong in a repository.
  • Office workers holding meeting notes, call details and to-do lists during the day.
  • Shoppers and families keeping lists and plans that need no account.
  • Anyone copying between apps who needs a scratch page for text in transit.

In practice, the notepad that gets used is the one already open. Pinning this page as a browser tab turns it into a permanent scratch pad that is one click away.

Privacy and Security: What to Keep Out of a Browser Notepad

Because notes stay on your device, nobody at WritoryBuzz can read them, and they cannot be lost in a server breach. They can, however, be read by anyone who uses your browser profile, so a shared computer is not a good place for private text.

Keep passwords, card numbers and one-time codes out of any notepad. A password manager encrypts what it stores and fills it in for you. If you only need a strong new password, create one with our password generator and save it in the manager, not in a note.

FAQs

Is this online notepad free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, it is free, and you do not need an account, an email address or a download. Open the page and start typing. You can keep up to 500 notes, and there is no watermark on exports. Because nothing is tied to an account, you cannot recover notes by logging in, so download a backup of anything important.

Where are my notes saved?

Your notes are saved in your browser's storage on your own device. They are not sent to WritoryBuzz or any other server. That keeps them private, but it also means they are tied to one browser on one device. Use the Download or Backup all notes options to keep a copy elsewhere.

Will I lose my notes if I close the browser or tab?

No. Closing a tab, quitting the browser or restarting your computer does not delete your notes. They are only lost if you clear site data, write in a private window that you then close, or the browser removes storage from a site you have not used for a long time.

Can I access my notes on another device?

Not directly. The notepad has no account, so notes do not sync between your phone and your laptop. To move them, choose Backup all notes on the first device, save the file, and use Import on the second. For a single note, you can also copy the text or download it as TXT.

How do I save notepad text as a PDF or TXT file?

Open the Download menu above the note and choose TXT or PDF. The file is created on your device and saved through your browser, with no upload. TXT keeps plain text, while PDF is better for sending or printing. You can also import an existing .txt file and export it as a PDF.

Is there a limit to how long a note can be?

There is no fixed limit on the page, but browsers cap how much a site can store. Basic web storage allows about 5 MiB per site, according to MDN, which is far more text than most people write in a note. The notepad warns you when your notes are getting large so that you can export older ones.

Does the online notepad work offline?

Once the page has loaded, you can keep writing without a connection, and your notes are still saved to your device as usual. That is useful on trains and planes. Reloading the page with no connection works only if your browser has kept the page in its cache, so open it once while you are online first.

Is it safe to keep passwords or private information in an online notepad?

It is better not to. Notes are stored unencrypted in your browser, so anyone with access to your browser profile can read them, and clearing site data erases them. Use a password manager for logins and card details, and use the notepad for everyday text that would not matter if someone saw it.

Ready to write your first note?

Scroll back up, click into the notepad and write your first note. It saves itself.
