Key Takeaways

  • A character is any letter, number, space, punctuation mark, symbol or emoji in your text.
  • Most limits, including X, Instagram, UCAS and SMS, count spaces as characters.
  • One emoji can count as two or more characters, and in SMS it cuts a 160 character message to 70.
  • Google sets no fixed meta description limit: it truncates snippets to fit the screen.
  • For English text, divide the character count with spaces by six to estimate the word count.

Count Characters Online in Real Time

The tool counts on every keystroke, so there is no button to press and no page reload. Type, paste or edit, and every number updates together. That makes it practical for trimming a caption or a meta description down to an exact limit.

Counting happens in JavaScript inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, saved or logged, which matters when you are checking a contract clause, a client draft or an unpublished application essay.

What Is a Character Counter?

A character counter is a tool that measures the length of a piece of text in characters instead of words. A character is a single unit of writing: a letter, a digit, a space, a punctuation mark, a symbol or an emoji. Character length is the measure used by text fields, social networks, search snippets, SMS gateways and application forms.

Word count tells you how much you have written. Character count tells you whether it will fit. If you only need words, our word counter covers that job on its own page.

What This Letter Counter and Word Counter Tool Measures

Different tools count differently, which is why two counters can disagree on the same text. These are the rules this one follows.

MetricHow it is calculated
Characters (with spaces)Every letter, digit, space, line break, punctuation mark, symbol and emoji. A character is what you see on screen, so an emoji counts as one.
Characters (without spaces)The same total with spaces, tabs and line breaks removed.
LettersAlphabetic characters only, A to Z in any language script. Digits and punctuation are excluded.
WordsGroups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks.
Reading and speaking timeWords divided by 238 for silent reading and by 150 for speaking aloud. Both are averages, so treat them as estimates.
SentencesText segments ending in a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. A final sentence without punctuation still counts.
Paragraphs and linesParagraphs are blocks split by a blank line. Lines are split by any line break.
Bytes (UTF-8)Storage size of the text, used for database fields and API limits.
UTF-16 units and code pointsUTF-16 units are what JavaScript and X count. Code points are the individual Unicode values behind each visible character.
SMS segmentsHow many text messages the content splits into, based on GSM-7 or UCS-2 encoding.

Character Count With Spaces vs Without Spaces

Character count with spaces is the total length of the text, including every space. Character count without spaces removes them. For English prose, spaces make up roughly one character in six, so the two numbers can differ by 15% or more.

Use the count including spaces unless a brief says otherwise. Social networks, SMS, HTML form fields and UCAS all count spaces. The count without spaces is mostly used by translators and some publishers that price work per character.

Expert tip

Line breaks count too. A caption with five blank lines for spacing spends five or more characters on nothing visible, and some systems store each line break as two characters.

Character Count Limit by Platform

Limits change, and scheduling tools sometimes enforce lower caps than the apps themselves. The figures below were checked against Buffer, Publer, Twilio, UCAS and Google Search Central documentation in October 2026.

Last updated: October 2026

On X, every link counts as 23 characters whatever its real length, and each emoji counts as two. Choose X post in the tool and it applies those rules for you.

SEO Title and Meta Description Length

Google states that there is no limit on how long a meta description can be, and that the snippet is truncated as needed to fit the device width. In practice, most SEO teams write titles of 50 to 60 characters and descriptions of 140 to 160 characters so the full text shows on desktop.

Google Ads is strict: responsive search ad headlines allow 30 characters and descriptions allow 90. After you hit the right length here, build the tags in our meta tag generator.

Length alone does not tell you how a result will look. Preview the title and description together in the Google SERP simulator before you publish.

SMS Character Counter: 160, 70 and Segments

A standard SMS holds 160 characters in GSM-7 encoding. Longer messages are split into segments of 153 characters each, because part of every segment is used to stitch the message back together.

Add one emoji, a curly quotation mark or a non-Latin character and the whole message switches to UCS-2 encoding. The limit drops to 70 characters, or 67 per segment. According to Twilio, a single emoji can roughly double your segment count and your cost, and messages are best kept under 320 characters.

Essay, Personal Statement and Application Limits

The UCAS personal statement for 2026 entry has three questions and a 4,000 character overall limit including spaces, with a minimum of 350 characters per answer. The AMCAS personal statement for US medical schools allows 5,300 characters including spaces.

Application portals often count line breaks and can cut text off without warning. Count here first, then paste.

Check your draft against any of these limits now: choose a preset in the tool and watch the remaining characters update live.

How Emoji, Symbols and Non-English Text Change the Count

Computers store text as numbers, and there is more than one way to count them. This is the main reason a symbol counter, a phone keyboard and a web form can report three different lengths for the same message.

TextVisible charactersCode pointsUTF-16 units (JavaScript, X)UTF-8 bytes
Letter A1111
Accented letter e (single code point)1112
Chinese or Japanese character1113
Thumbs up emoji1124
Family emoji (four people joined)171125

This tool reports visible characters as the main count, because that matches what you see, and shows UTF-16 units and bytes alongside it. That makes it usable as a Japanese character counter or an Arabic letter counter, and for any script where one visible character takes more than one byte. Open the Unicode and bytes tab to inspect every character.

How to Check Character Count in Word, Google Docs and Excel

Microsoft Word Character Count

Open the Review tab and select Word Count, or press Ctrl + Shift + G on Windows. Word shows characters with spaces and characters without spaces. Select a passage first to count only that part of the document.

Character Counter in Google Docs

Open Tools and select Word count, or press Ctrl + Shift + C (Cmd + Shift + C on a Mac). Tick the option to display the count while typing if you want it on screen.

Count Characters in a String in Excel or Google Sheets

Use =LEN(A1) to count characters in a cell including spaces. Use =LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A1," ","")) to count without spaces.

These built-in counters do not show platform limits, SMS segments or letter frequency. An online character count tool is quicker when the text lives in a browser, an email or a PDF.

Character Count to Word Count: Quick Conversion

English words average about five letters, plus a space. Dividing the character count with spaces by six gives a workable word estimate, and dividing by seven gives a cautious one for formal or technical writing.

Characters (with spaces)Approximate words
15021 to 25
28040 to 47
50071 to 83
1,000143 to 167
2,200314 to 367
4,000571 to 667
5,300757 to 883

Treat these as estimates. Vocabulary, language and formatting all shift the ratio, so run the actual text through the counter when the limit is strict.

Letter Frequency Counter: Count Individual Letters

The frequency view lists how many times each letter and character appears in your text, sorted from most to least used. Teachers use it for phonics and spelling work, puzzle and cipher fans use it for frequency analysis, and designers use it to plan signage or engraving lettering. You will find it in the Letter frequency tab under the tool.

For repeated words instead of repeated letters, use the keyword density checker to see which terms dominate a draft.

Who Uses a Char Counter Online

  • Social media managers fitting captions, bios and ad copy to each network.
  • SEO writers checking title tags, meta descriptions, alt text and URL length. A text to slug converter keeps the URL short too.
  • Students working to essay and personal statement limits such as UCAS and AMCAS.
  • SMS and email marketers controlling segment counts, subject lines and send costs.
  • Developers validating input length against database columns such as VARCHAR(255) and API payload limits.
  • Translators and editors quoting or billing by character count.

In practice, the most common mistake we see is writing to a limit in one app and pasting into another that counts differently. Checking the final text once, in one neutral counter, removes that guesswork.

Editing to a limit usually means cutting. To trim faster, strip repeats with the duplicate word remover.

When you have two versions of the same copy, the text compare tool shows exactly what changed between them.

Privacy: Your Text Stays in Your Browser

This tool has no upload step. The counting script runs locally on your device, so the text you paste is not transmitted, stored or used for training. Close the tab and it is gone. It works with long documents too, since there is no server limit to hit.

FAQs

How do I count characters in a text?

Paste or type the text into the character counter at the top of this page. The total appears immediately and updates as you edit, showing characters with spaces, characters without spaces, words, sentences and paragraphs. There is nothing to install and no sign-up. For text inside a document, Microsoft Word and Google Docs also have a built-in word count window.

Does a character count include spaces?

Yes, in most cases. A standard character count includes spaces, punctuation, numbers and line breaks. X, Instagram, SMS, HTML form fields and the UCAS personal statement all count spaces. Some translation and publishing briefs ask for a count without spaces instead, so this tool shows both numbers side by side and you can use whichever your brief requires.

How many characters is 250 words?

In English, 250 words is roughly 1,500 to 1,750 characters including spaces, or about 1,250 to 1,500 without spaces. The exact figure depends on word length, so technical or academic writing runs longer than conversational text. Paste the actual text into the tool for a precise number when you are working to a strict limit.

How do I check character count in Microsoft Word?

Go to the Review tab and select Word Count, or press Ctrl + Shift + G on Windows. The window lists pages, words, characters without spaces, characters with spaces, paragraphs and lines. To count only part of the document, highlight that text first and open the same window. The status bar at the bottom also opens it with one click.

How do I see the character count in Google Docs?

Open the Tools menu and choose Word count, or press Ctrl + Shift + C on Windows and Cmd + Shift + C on a Mac. Google Docs shows pages, words, characters and characters excluding spaces. Highlight a section first to count only that selection, and tick the display option to keep the count visible while you type.

How many characters can a text message have?

A single SMS holds 160 characters when it uses the standard GSM-7 alphabet. Longer messages are split into linked segments of 153 characters. If the message contains an emoji or a non-Latin character, the limit falls to 70 characters, or 67 per segment. Carriers bill each segment, so a short edit can halve the cost of a campaign.

Why does an emoji count as two characters?

Most emoji sit outside the basic range of Unicode, so systems that measure text in UTF-16 units, including JavaScript and X, need two units to store one emoji. Combined emoji such as family groups or skin tone variants use even more. This tool shows the visible count and the UTF-16 count, so you can match whichever your platform uses.

Is this character counter free, and is my text saved?

Yes, it is free with no account, no daily cap and no word limit. Your text is not saved anywhere. All counting runs inside your browser, so nothing you paste is uploaded to WritoryBuzz or to any third party. That makes it safe to use for confidential drafts, client copy and personal statements.
