Image Resizer: Resize Image Online Free
This free image resizer changes the width, height and file size of any photo in seconds. Set the new size in pixels, as a percentage or as a target in KB, pick a social media preset if you need one, and download the result as JPG, PNG or WebP. It runs in your browser, so your pictures are never uploaded.
Resize your photo now or keep reading for social media sizes, print sizes and how to hit a KB limit.

JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF. Add up to 50 at once. Nothing is uploaded.
100% keeps the size. 50% leaves a quarter of the pixels. Going above about 150% makes pictures look soft.
The tool starts from the original size, lowers quality first, then shrinks the picture only if it must. 1 KB is counted as 1,000 bytes, so the file is safe under either convention.

Key Takeaways
- Resizing changes pixel dimensions. Cropping cuts the frame. Compressing lowers file size at the same dimensions.
- Making an image smaller keeps it sharp. Making it bigger cannot add detail that was never captured.
- Halving both width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels, which cuts file size sharply.
- Lock the aspect ratio to stop faces and logos from stretching.
- For print, multiply the size in inches by 300 to get the pixels you need.
Resize Image Online Without Uploading It
Most online tools send your photo to a server, process it there and send it back. This one does the work on your own device with the browser canvas, so there is no upload wait, no file size cap set by a server and no copy of your image stored anywhere.
That matters for more than speed. ID scans, client product shots, unreleased designs and family photos stay on your computer or phone from start to finish.
What Is an Image Resizer?
An image resizer is a tool that changes the pixel dimensions of a picture, for example from 4032 x 3024 down to 1080 x 810. Fewer pixels mean a smaller file that loads faster and fits upload limits. More pixels make the picture larger on screen or paper, but they do not add real detail.
People also call it a photo resizer, a picture resizer, an image size converter or an image dimension changer. They all describe the same job: making a picture the exact size a website, app, form or printer expects.

Image Resizer Free Features: What You Can Change
| Control | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Width and height (pixels) | Sets exact pixel dimensions. | A site or form asks for a fixed size, such as 1200 x 630. |
| Percentage | Scales both sides by the same percent. | You only need the picture smaller, such as 50% of the original. |
| Aspect ratio lock | Changes one side and calculates the other. | Always, unless you want a deliberate stretch. |
| Fit, fill or stretch | Fit keeps the whole picture. Fill crops the overflow. Stretch forces the shape. | The target shape differs from the original shape. |
| Presets | Loads common sizes for social networks, print and web. | You do not know the exact dimensions. |
| Target file size (KB) | Lowers quality and dimensions until the file fits. | A portal sets a limit such as 100 KB or 2 MB. |
| Format and quality | Saves as JPG, PNG or WebP at a chosen quality. | You need a lighter file or a transparent background. |
| Bulk mode | Applies one setting to many files and downloads a ZIP. | You are preparing a product catalog or a gallery. |
Resize vs Crop vs Compress: Which One You Need
These three actions are often confused, and choosing the wrong one is the usual reason an upload is rejected or a picture looks distorted.
| Action | What changes | What stays the same | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resize | Pixel dimensions and usually file size | The whole picture and its shape | Fit a size requirement |
| Crop | The frame and the shape | The scale of what remains | Turn a landscape photo into a square |
| Compress | File size and some fine detail | Pixel dimensions | Meet a KB limit or speed up a page |
Many jobs need two of them. A square Instagram post from a wide photo is a crop followed by a resize. A passport or exam form upload is a resize followed by compression.
How to Reduce Image Size in KB or MB
To reduce image file size, lower one or more of three things: the pixel dimensions, the quality setting, or the weight of the format. Dimensions have the biggest effect. Halving both the width and the height leaves one quarter of the pixels, and the file shrinks by roughly the same proportion.
- Reduce dimensions first. A 12 megapixel phone photo is far larger than any screen or form needs.
- Lower JPG or WebP quality next. Settings between 70 and 85 are hard to tell apart from the original at normal viewing size.
- Switch format last. A photo saved as PNG is often several times heavier than the same photo saved as JPG or WebP.
If you have a strict cap, type it into the target file size field. The tool tests quality and size combinations and stops at the best result that fits, so you do not have to guess.
Need a photo under a size limit? Enter the limit in KB in the tool and download a file that fits on the first try.
Resize Image Without Losing Quality
You can downsize an image with no visible loss, because the tool is combining existing pixels into fewer of them. Loss appears in two cases: when a picture is enlarged beyond its original size, and when it is saved repeatedly as a low quality JPG.
Make an Image Smaller
Start from the largest original you have and resize once to the final size. Keep the aspect ratio locked. Save photos as JPG or WebP at a quality of 80 or higher, and keep logos, screenshots and text as PNG so edges stay crisp.
Make an Image Bigger
Enlarging stretches the pixels you already have. A modest increase of up to about 150% usually holds up on screen. Beyond that, edges soften and noise becomes visible, because the missing detail has to be estimated. If you need a large print, the real fix is a larger source file.
Never resize a copy of a copy. In practice, the blurry images we see most often were shrunk for a chat app, saved, then enlarged again for a website. Go back to the camera original every time.
Social Media Image Sizes: Resize a Photo for Instagram, YouTube and More
Each network crops or recompresses anything that does not match its layout. The sizes below are from Buffer's 2026 guide and Google's YouTube Help documentation, checked in October 2026.
| Platform | Image type | Size in pixels | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed portrait | 1080 x 1350 | 4:5 | |
| Feed square | 1080 x 1080 | 1:1 | |
| Story and Reel cover | 1080 x 1920 | 9:16 | |
| Shared link or landscape post | 1200 x 630 | 1.91:1 | |
| Page cover | 851 x 315 | 2.7:1 | |
| X (Twitter) | Landscape post | 1600 x 900 | 16:9 |
| X (Twitter) | Header | 1500 x 500 | 3:1 |
| Square post | 1080 x 1080 | 1:1 | |
| Personal cover | 1584 x 396 | 4:1 | |
| YouTube | Thumbnail | 3840 x 2160 recommended, 640 wide minimum | 16:9 |
| YouTube | Channel banner | 2560 x 1440, safe area 1546 x 423 | 16:9 |
| Pin | 1000 x 1500 | 2:3 | |
| TikTok | Post and Story | 1080 x 1920 | 9:16 |
Last updated: October 2026. Pick any of these from the Preset size menu in the tool.
YouTube accepts thumbnails up to 50 MB on desktop but only 2 MB from mobile, so a resize is often needed before a phone upload.
Picture Size Converter: Pixels, Inches and DPI for Print
Screens measure pictures in pixels. Printers measure them in inches or millimetres at a set density, normally 300 dots per inch (DPI) for photo quality. The conversion is simple: pixels equal inches multiplied by DPI.
| Print size | Pixels needed at 300 DPI |
|---|---|
| 2 x 2 in (US passport photo) | 600 x 600 |
| 4 x 6 in | 1200 x 1800 |
| 5 x 7 in | 1500 x 2100 |
| 8 x 10 in | 2400 x 3000 |
| A4 (8.27 x 11.69 in) | 2480 x 3508 |
A US passport print must be 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), according to the US Department of State. Official photo rules also cover head size, background and editing, so check the current guidance for your country before you submit.
Resize JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF: Choosing the Output Format
The MDN image format guide covers every web format in depth. These are the four you are most likely to meet.
| Format | Compression | Transparency | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Lossy | No | Photographs and any upload form that asks for JPEG |
| PNG | Lossless | Yes | Logos, screenshots, diagrams and text |
| WebP | Lossy or lossless | Yes | Website images where a small file matters |
| GIF | Lossless, 256 colours | On or off only | Simple graphics. Photos look banded |
When you resize a PNG with a transparent background, keep it as PNG or WebP. Saving it as JPG fills the transparent area with a solid colour. This tool resizes still GIF images and saves them as PNG; an animated GIF keeps only its first frame.
Bulk Image Resizer: Batch Resize Images at Once
Bulk mode applies one rule to every file you add, then packs the results into a single ZIP. Set a width, such as 1600 pixels, and each picture scales to it in proportion, whatever its original shape. Tick Never enlarge to treat the width as a maximum, so smaller pictures are left alone.
It is the quickest way to prepare a product catalog, a property listing, a blog gallery or a folder of event photos. Processing happens on your device, so speed depends on your hardware and not on your connection.
How to Change Image Size on Windows, Mac and iPhone
Windows
Open the picture in Photos, select the three dot menu and choose Resize image. In Paint, press Ctrl + W to resize by percentage or pixels.
Mac
Open the picture in Preview and choose Tools, then Adjust Size. Enter the new width and height and keep Scale proportionally selected. Apple's Preview guide shows each step.
iPhone and Android
The iPhone Photos app can crop but has no field for exact pixel dimensions. The Shortcuts app includes a Resize Image action, and most Android gallery apps offer a resize option in the edit menu. A browser tool is faster when you need exact pixels, a KB target or many files.
Why Image Dimensions Matter for Page Speed and SEO
Oversized images are one of the most common causes of slow pages. Google's Lighthouse audit includes a check named Properly size images, which lists every picture that is served larger than it is displayed. A 4000 pixel photo shown in an 800 pixel column makes visitors download many times more data than they can see. web.dev explains the audit.
Resize to the largest size the layout uses, then test the page with our PageSpeed checker to confirm the gain.
Social previews follow the same logic. Size the share image to 1200 x 630 and reference it with the tags from the meta tag generator.
Who Uses a Photo Resizer
- Bloggers and SEO teams cutting image weight before upload to improve load time.
- Online sellers matching marketplace image rules across hundreds of product shots.
- Social media managers producing one visual in five different shapes.
- Students and job applicants fitting photos and signatures into strict KB limits on forms.
- Designers and developers exporting icons and thumbnails. To pull an existing site icon first, use the favicon downloader.
- Anyone emailing photos who wants attachments that send quickly.
Privacy: Your Photos Stay on Your Device
Nothing you add is transmitted, stored or viewed by anyone. The resizing script runs locally, and the files are cleared when you close or refresh the tab. There is no account, no watermark and no sign-up.
FAQs
How do I resize an image without losing quality?
Start from the original file, keep the aspect ratio locked and make the picture smaller, not larger. Save photos as JPG or WebP at a quality of 80 or above, and save logos or screenshots as PNG. Resize once to the final size instead of resizing a copy several times, because each lossy save removes a little more detail.
How do I reduce image size in KB?
Lower the pixel dimensions first, then the quality setting. In this tool, enter your limit in the target file size field, for example 100 KB, and it adjusts both until the file fits. Photos shrink most as JPG or WebP. A PNG photo is usually much heavier, so changing format alone often brings a file under the limit.
What is the difference between resizing and cropping an image?
Resizing changes how many pixels the whole picture has, so everything in the frame stays but gets larger or smaller. Cropping cuts away part of the frame and changes its shape, for example from landscape to square. When a target has a different shape from your photo, you normally crop to the right ratio first and then resize to the exact pixel size.
Does resizing an image reduce its file size?
Yes, when you make it smaller. File size follows the number of pixels, so halving both the width and the height leaves a quarter of the pixels and a much lighter file. Enlarging does the opposite. If you need the same dimensions with a smaller file, lower the quality setting or switch to JPG or WebP instead.
What size should an image be for Instagram?
Use 1080 x 1350 pixels for a portrait feed post, which takes up the most screen space, or 1080 x 1080 for a square post. Stories and Reel covers are 1080 x 1920 pixels. Instagram scales larger uploads down to 1080 pixels wide, so resizing first gives you control over how the picture is cropped and compressed.
How do I make a picture bigger without it going blurry?
Enlarge in small steps and stay within about 150% of the original size for screen use. Bigger jumps look soft because new pixels are estimated from the old ones. For a large print, work out the pixels you need by multiplying inches by 300, then find or reshoot a source image that already has that many.
Can I resize several images at once?
Yes. Add all your files at once, choose one rule such as a width of 1600 pixels or 50% of the original size, and download the results together as a ZIP. Each picture keeps its own proportions. Because the work is done in your browser, there is no upload queue, and you can add up to 50 images in each batch.
Is this image resizer free, and are my photos uploaded?
It is free with no sign-up and no watermark. Your photos are not uploaded. All resizing happens inside your browser on your own device, and nothing is saved after you close the tab. That makes it suitable for ID documents, client work and personal pictures you would not send to a server.
