Net WPM and accuracy

Gross speed, errors and a speed band at the end.

Words, numbers or your text

Quick answer
Choose a test length, press into the text box and start typing. The timer starts on your first key. When time is up you get your net words per minute, your accuracy and a list of the characters you missed.

Key Takeaways

  • Net WPM is your gross speed minus a penalty for uncorrected errors, so accuracy matters as much as speed.
  • One word is counted as five characters, including spaces, which is the standard used by most typing tests.
  • A 1 minute test is quick, but 3 to 5 minutes gives a steadier and more reliable score.
  • Pasting is blocked during the test, so your score reflects real typing.
  • Your best score is saved in your own browser only. Nothing is uploaded.

How to Take the Typing Test

  1. 1
STEP 1 Pick a test length. One minute is fine for a quick check. Five minutes gives a steadier score.
  2. 2
STEP 2 Choose the text type. Common words suit most people. Punctuation and numbers are harder and closer to real work.
  3. 3
STEP 3 Click the text box and start typing. The timer begins on your first keystroke, so you do not need to press a start button.
  4. 4
STEP 4 Type the highlighted word. Correct letters turn green and mistakes turn red. Use backspace to fix an error, or keep going.
  5. 5
STEP 5 Read your results when the timer ends, then press Restart to beat your score.

Words Per Minute Typing Test: How WPM Is Calculated

A words per minute typing test does not count real words. It counts every five characters, including spaces and punctuation, as one word. This keeps scores fair, because a text full of long words would otherwise score lower than a text full of short ones.

MeasureFormula
Gross WPM(characters typed divided by 5) divided by minutes
Net WPMGross WPM minus (uncorrected errors divided by minutes)
AccuracyCorrect characters divided by total characters typed, as a percentage

Worked example

You type 300 characters in one minute and leave 5 mistakes uncorrected. Gross WPM is 300 divided by 5, which is 60. Net WPM is 60 minus 5, which is 55. Accuracy is 295 correct characters out of 300, which is 98.3 percent. Your score is 55 WPM at 98 percent accuracy.

Net WPM is the number to track. A high gross speed with many errors is not useful in real work, because you have to go back and fix the mistakes.

What Is a Good Typing Speed?

Typing speed depends on age, experience and how often you type. These bands are a practical guide for adults typing common English text:

Net WPMLevelWhat it usually means
Under 25BeginnerHunt and peck typing or very little practice.
25 to 40AverageComfortable for everyday email and chat.
40 to 60GoodSuitable for most office and admin work.
60 to 80FastStrong touch typist. Meets the bar for many data and support roles.
80 to 100Very fastProfessional level, typically needs regular practice.
Over 100EliteCompetitive typists and transcriptionists.

Many job listings ask for around 40 to 60 WPM, and data entry roles often ask for more, but requirements vary by employer. Accuracy matters as much as speed. Most employers want at least 95 percent.

Typing Test Length: 1 Minute, 5 Minutes or 10 Minutes?

A one minute typing test is quick, but it rewards a short burst and can swing a lot from one try to the next. A 5 minute typing test shows what you can keep up, because tiredness and loss of focus start to show. A 10 minute typing test is the best match for transcription and long writing jobs.

If an employer asked you to take a test, take the length they asked for. If you just want to improve, run a one minute test as a warm up, then a five minute test once a week to track real progress.

Number Typing Test and Punctuation Mode

Typing numbers is a different skill from typing words. A number typing test is used in data entry, accounting and finance jobs, where people key digits on the top row or the number pad. Choose Numbers mode to practise only digits, or Punctuation mode to get commas, full stops, brackets and quotes in the text.

Most people type more slowly with numbers and symbols than with plain words, so do not be alarmed if your score drops in these modes. Practise them separately.

How to Improve Your Typing Speed

  • Learn touch typing. Place your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and use all ten fingers. Ten finger typing is the biggest single gain for most people.
  • Do not look at the keys. Looking down builds a habit that caps your speed. Cover the keyboard if you need to.
  • Accuracy first, speed second. Slow down until you make almost no errors, then raise your pace. Speed follows accuracy.
  • Practise in short daily sessions. Fifteen minutes a day beats two hours once a week.
  • Type real text. Practise with emails, articles and your own writing, not only word lists.
  • Sit well. Keep your wrists level, your elbows near 90 degrees and your screen at eye level to avoid strain.
  • Use the Custom text mode. Paste a paragraph you want to practise, such as a template you type every day at work.

Typing Test for Job Applications

Employers use a typing test to check speed and accuracy for roles such as data entry, customer support, live chat and admin. A live chat typing test, for example, may check how fast you reply to a customer as well as how many errors you make. To prepare, take the test on a keyboard you normally use, in a quiet place, and aim for a net WPM above the job requirement with at least 95 percent accuracy.

Our test is for practice. Official employer tests use their own platform, so use this page to get ready, not as a certificate.

Is My Typing Data Private?

Yes. The test runs in your browser. Your keystrokes are not recorded on a server and your text is not stored. Your best score is only kept on your device if you choose to save it, and you can clear it at any time.

FAQs

How do I check my typing speed?

Choose a test length, click the text box and start typing the passage on screen. The timer starts on your first keystroke. When it ends, you see your net words per minute and your accuracy. Take the test two or three times and use your average, because one run can be unusually good or bad.

How is typing speed calculated in WPM?

Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where one word is five characters including spaces. Gross WPM is characters typed divided by five, divided by minutes. Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors per minute. For example, 300 characters in one minute with 5 errors gives 60 gross and 55 net WPM.

What is a good typing speed?

A good typing speed for most adults is 40 to 60 net WPM, and anything over 60 counts as fast. Average typists reach about 40 WPM. Many office jobs ask for 40 to 60, and data entry roles often want more. Accuracy of 95 percent or higher matters as much as speed.

How can I type faster?

Learn touch typing with all ten fingers on the home row, and stop looking at the keys. Slow down until your accuracy is high, then raise your speed gradually. Practise for 15 minutes every day with real text, keep good posture, and track your net WPM weekly so you can see progress.

Is a 1 minute typing test accurate?

A one minute typing test gives a useful quick estimate, but it varies more than a longer test because one slip can change the score. Five minutes shows a steadier figure because it includes the effect of tiredness. Take a few one minute tests and average them, or use a longer test for a reliable result.

What is the difference between gross WPM and net WPM?

Gross WPM counts everything you typed, including mistakes, divided by time. Net WPM subtracts the penalty for uncorrected errors, so it shows how fast you type correct text. Net WPM is the fairer score and the one employers care about, because mistakes cost time to fix.

Can I use my own text for the test?

Yes. Choose Custom text mode and paste any passage, such as an email template or a paragraph from a book. The tool scores your speed and accuracy on that exact text. This is useful for practising material you type often at work or for a specific exam.

Is this typing test free and private?

Yes. It is free with no sign up, and the test runs in your browser. Your keystrokes and text are not sent to a server. Any best score is stored only on your own device, and you can delete it whenever you want.
