FAQs

What are easy Thanksgiving desserts besides pumpkin pie?

Our suggestions include apple crisp, pecan pie bars, cheesecake, pumpkin mousse cups and baked cinnamon apples. They need less rolling and shaping than pie and many can be made ahead. Our own addition: choose recipes that suit your oven space, make the filling or topping separately if it saves time, and keep a short note of what is stored where.

How long can pumpkin pie be stored?

University of Maine Extension says pumpkin pie can be refrigerated up to four days and frozen up to two months. IFAS adds that it should not sit at room temperature more than two hours. Our own addition: slice the pie only when you are ready to serve, return it to the fridge soon after, and discard any slice that has been left out for longer than the limit.

Is pecan pie safe at room temperature?

IFAS describes pecan pie as low-risk, while pumpkin pie should not sit out more than two hours. Maine Extension says pecan and other egg-based pies keep up to four days. Keep leftovers refrigerated. Our own addition: if you are unsure about any pie, follow the storage times given by the extension services, keep the pie chilled, and check the recipe for eggs or cream.

Which desserts can I make ahead?

UGA says pumpkin pie and cheesecake can be made two days ahead and fruit pies can be covered at room temperature the day before. Our no-bake ideas can be made the day before. Our own addition: bake the dessert in a dish that can also go to the table, cover it well in the fridge, and let it warm slightly before serving for better flavour.

How should I thaw a frozen pie?

Maine Extension recommends thawing frozen pies in the fridge. Plan ahead, because thawing takes time. Keep the pie chilled until serving, and observe the two-hour limit at room temperature. Our own addition: plan the thaw in advance, keep the pie on a plate to catch moisture, and warm it briefly in the oven if you like a crisp crust before serving.

Are these dessert ideas tested recipes?

No. The 12 ideas are our own suggestions, not tested recipes with measurements. The storage times come from University of Maine Extension, IFAS and UGA. Use a trusted recipe for amounts and baking times. Our own addition: scale the amounts to your guest count, test any new recipe once beforehand if you can, and follow its own baking time and temperature closely.

Choose Desserts by Timing

The easiest dessert table is the one you can finish before the day. Pick sweets that store well and need no last-minute work.

Choose three desserts this week, mark when each is made and stored, and clear fridge space for 24 and 25 November. On Thanksgiving, you can simply slice and serve.
