What Is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as placeholder text in design and publishing. It looks like real language, with word lengths and rhythm that match normal text, but it says nothing, so nobody gets distracted reading it. People also search for it as "lipsum" or "dummy text".
The passage traces to Cicero's philosophical work "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. The placeholder is not a clean quotation. Words are altered, removed or added, and the order no longer follows Cicero's argument.

Where Does Lorem Ipsum Come From?
Latin professor Richard McClintock of Hampden-Sydney College is credited with tracing the text to its source. He searched classical literature for the rare Latin word "consectetur" and found it in sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero's De Finibus.
The printing industry used scrambled Latin long before computers. Letraset's dry-transfer lettering sheets popularised it in the 1960s, and desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker carried it into the digital era in the 1980s.
The famous opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", begins mid-word. Lorem looks like a clipped form of dolorem, from a sentence that translates roughly as "there is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain" (H. Rackham's 1914 translation). The Cicero (English) style lets you read a version of that thought.

Real content is better as early as you can get it. Design that only works with perfect-length dummy text often breaks with real headlines, which are longer, shorter or messier. Test your layout with a very short and a very long version of real copy too.
Common Mistakes
- Publishing placeholder text. Pages with filler can look thin or unfinished to visitors and to search engines. Search before launch for "lorem ipsum" and "dolor sit amet" across your site.
- Using too little text. Three tidy lines hide layout problems. Test with a full article and with extreme lengths.
- Forgetting the headings and lists. Real articles have subheads, bullets and links. Turn on those options.
- Starting every paragraph the same. Use Random start to avoid "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" repeating.
- Treating it as Latin to read. It has no coherent meaning. Do not use it where translation or proofreading is needed.
- Ignoring non-Latin scripts. If your product ships in Hindi or another script, test with text in that script too, because Latin filler hides line-height and font-fallback issues.
