Meta tags are HTML elements in a page's head section that give browsers, search engines and social platforms information about the page. They are invisible to visitors but control the title and description in search results, whether a page is indexed and how a shared link looks on social media.
Each tag has a different audience. The title and description feed search listings. The canonical and robots tags guide search engines on which URL to keep and whether to index it. Open Graph and Twitter Card tags tell social platforms which image, headline and summary to show when someone shares your link. Without them, platforms guess, and the guess is often a wrong image or a cut-off sentence.
Many people search for a meta description generator, so here is the honest version. This tool builds the tag from the text you write. It does not write the description for you. That is a good thing, because a description should reflect your real page, and you can write a good one in a minute with this checklist:
The meta description is not a ranking factor. It can still raise clicks, since it is often what a searcher reads. Google may use it, or rewrite it from page text, depending on the query. Use the Google SERP Simulator to check pixel-width truncation on desktop and mobile.
| Tag | Purpose | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| title | The page title in tabs and search results | 50 to 60 characters, unique per page |
| meta description | The snippet text under the title | 120 to 160 characters |
| canonical | Names the preferred URL for duplicate or similar pages | Full absolute URL, self-referencing on normal pages |
| meta robots | Tells crawlers whether to index and follow | index, follow is the default |
| og:title, og:description | Headline and summary in social previews | Can differ from the SEO title |
| og:image | Image in social previews | About 1200 by 630 pixels |
| twitter:card | Sets the card layout on X | summary_large_image for most pages |
| lang (html attribute) | Declares the page language | Match the page content |
Open Graph tags were introduced by Facebook and are read by Facebook, LinkedIn and many other apps, including messaging apps that show link previews. Twitter Card tags control the preview on X, and if they are missing, X falls back to Open Graph tags. Setting both gives you control over every surface. Use a clear, high-quality image of about 1200 by 630 pixels, and keep the title short enough not to be cut off.
A canonical tag tells search engines which URL is the main version when similar content is reachable at several addresses, for example with tracking parameters. It is a hint, not a command. The robots meta tag controls indexing:
| Value | Meaning | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| index, follow | Index the page and follow its links | Normal public pages (default) |
| noindex, follow | Keep out of results, follow links | Thank-you pages, internal search results, thin utility pages |
| index, nofollow | Index, but do not follow links | Rare, for pages with untrusted links |
| noindex, nofollow | Neither index nor follow | Staging or private pages |
For noindex to work, the page must stay crawlable. Do not also block it in robots.txt, or Google cannot see the tag. The Robots.txt Generator explains the difference between blocking crawling and blocking indexing.
Skip them. Google confirmed in 2009 that it does not use the meta keywords tag for ranking, and it remains ignored. Searches for a meta keywords generator are common, but the tag adds no value for Google and can reveal your targets to competitors. Spend that time on the title, description and page content.
The generator can include basic JSON-LD structured data, such as Article schema, which identifies the author, date and content type. It is a quick way to add the basics. For richer markup across 16 types, including Product, Local Business, Event and Organization, use the Schema Markup Generator.

About 50 to 60 characters. Google truncates titles by pixel width, around 580px on desktop, so the exact count depends on letter width. Check the preview.
Roughly 120 to 160 characters. Put the key message first, since mobile results show less. Google may rewrite it anyway, so make the page content strong.
