HinduTone’s Dharma Desk gives the Dhanteras 2026 puja muhurat for New Delhi as 6:02 p.m. to 7:58 p.m. on Friday, 6 November, inside a Pradosh Kaal of 5:32 p.m. to 8:09 p.m., with Trayodashi running from 10:30 a.m. IST on 6 November to 10:47 a.m. on 7 November. Timings change from city to city, so use your own city’s time.
This guide follows HinduTone’s home method (page published 7 June 2026, updated 21 October 2026) and its Kuber puja guide (25 October 2026). Customs vary by region and family, and HinduTone itself says the family’s own tradition comes first. I am not a priest, so use this as a general guide and ask an elder or your family priest for details. Diwali Lakshmi Puja follows on Sunday, 8 November.

The Eight Steps
This is HinduTone’s home method, paraphrased.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Clean the house, especially the entrance and kitchen; make a rangoli and decorate the door |
| 2 | After sunset, place Ganesha, Lakshmi and Kubera on a clean cloth, with Dhanvantari if you keep one |
| 3 | Place the new vessel, coin or jewellery in front |
| 4 | Light a ghee lamp and begin with Ganesha, offering a flower and a sweet |
| 5 | Offer kumkum, turmeric, akshata, flowers, incense and naivedya |
| 6 | Pray to Dhanvantari for family health |
| 7 | Chant the Lakshmi mantra, perform aarti and share prasad |
| 8 | Light the Yama Deepam outside the door, facing south |
Kuber Puja Additions
HinduTone’s Kuber puja guide adds a sankalp (a statement of purpose), marking the cash box or account book with a swastika or ‘Shubh Labh’ in kumkum, and worshipping Ganesha first, then Lakshmi, then Kubera. It prints two mantras, ‘Om Gam Ganapataye Namah’ for Ganesha and ‘Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah’ for Lakshmi, and does not print a Kubera mantra because it could not verify a standard text.
Many families repeat the worship on Diwali night. For wider festival traditions, see our guide to the first year of marriage, which covers how new couples can plan festivals.
Yama Deepam
HinduTone says the Yama Deepam is lit after sunset during Pradosh Kaal outside the main entrance, facing south. It uses a clay lamp with four wicks and sesame or mustard oil. Where open flames are not allowed, it suggests a lamp on a safe tray or a battery lamp.
Our own safety note: keep the lamp away from curtains, dry flowers and rangoli powder, and never leave it unattended.
Fasting and Health
HinduTone says Kuber puja does not require a fast and that pregnant, diabetic, elderly or unwell people, or those on regular medicine, should consult a doctor before fasting. It also says the puja is a prayer of gratitude, not a guarantee of wealth.
