Diwali Sale Shopping Guide: Smart Ways to Save on Electronics

Key takeaways

  • Card offers have caps, minimum spends and exclusions; PickMyCard's SBI example capped savings at 13,750 rupees.
  • Which? found 83 percent of 175 tracked products were cheaper or equal at least once in the year, so check price history.
  • NBC Select advises making a ranked list, stacking savings and checking return and price-match policies.
  • Exchange and No Cost EMI advice here is ours: compare totals, not headlines.
  • Set a budget first; festive sales are designed to make spending feel easy.

PickMyCard reported that the SBI Card offer in Amazon’s 2026 Great Indian Festival capped its 10 percent instant discount at 13,750 rupees per card and excluded cards such as Cashback SBI, Flipkart SBI and Paytm SBI, which shows why the headline percentage rarely tells the whole story. For electronics, the details decide the real price.

This guide to Diwali sale shopping uses PickMyCard’s offer terms, Which? research on fake discounts and NBC Select’s savings tips. The methods for exchange and EMI are our general guidance, not tested data. Diwali is on Sunday, 8 November 2026 in India, and I could not confirm which store sales will still be running, so check each store’s page.

Start With a Ranked List and Budget

NBC Select advises making a ranked list of what you need, with a buffer, and signing up for alerts. Our own addition: set a maximum spend per item and a total ceiling before you open any sale page. For budgeting methods, see our guide to the 50/30/20 budget rule.

StepAction
1List items by priority
2Set a maximum price for each
3Record today’s price
4Set price alerts
5Buy only when the price meets your number

Check Price History

Which? analysed 175 products from the 2024 UK Black Friday sales and found 83 percent were cheaper or equal at least once during the year, and that 56 percent of 1,617 TVs had a price between the sale price and the stated ‘was’ price. These are UK findings, but the same habit helps in India: look at what the item actually sold for. NBC Select names CamelCamelCamel, Honey and Keepa, whose coverage in India may vary.

Our tip: take screenshots of prices a week before the sale.

Read Card Offers Closely

PickMyCard’s Amazon example shows what to check. Terms for the main sale came from secondary outlets, so use it as a template, not as a current offer.

TermExample (PickMyCard, SBI Card offer)
Discount10% instant, including EMI and No Cost EMI
Cap13,750 rupees per card
Minimum spend2,490 rupees; 4,990 rupees for mobiles net of exchange
Excluded cardsCashback SBI, Flipkart SBI, Paytm SBI, corporate cards, RuPay credit cards via UPI
PointsReward points on discounted orders are reversed later

Exchange and EMI: Compare Totals (Our Guidance)

These tips are general advice, not sourced data. Ask what the exchange value is and whether it is guaranteed. Compare the full EMI payment with the one-time price, and check processing fees. Remember that the exchange can affect minimum-spend thresholds, as PickMyCard’s net-of-exchange rule shows.

QuestionWhy
Is the exchange value fixed?Final value may depend on inspection
What is the EMI total? It may exceed the cash price
Are there fees? They add to the cost
Is the offer stackable? Some do not combine

Electronics Buying Rules of Thumb

Scripps News reports that older models typically get bigger markdowns, according to CNET’s Russell Holly, so last year’s model may suit you. Check warranty terms and return windows, and buy from a seller you can trust. For more tech ideas, see our guide to underrated tech gadgets worth buying.

FAQs

How do I save on electronics in a Diwali sale?

Set a budget, record the item’s usual price, check price history and read the card offer terms. PickMyCard’s SBI example shows caps, minimum spends and exclusions that decide the real saving. Buy only when the final price meets your number. Our own addition: compare the final amount after every discount, card offer and exchange value, and include delivery and installation charges when they apply.

Are Diwali sale discounts real?

Some are, some are not. Which? found 56 percent of 1,617 TVs had a price between the sale and ‘was’ price, and that many products were cheaper at other times. Those are UK findings, but they show why price history matters. Our own addition: ask a friend who bought the same item last year what they paid, and compare it with today’s price, which is a simple extra check.

How do card offers work?

Banks give an instant discount or cashback with conditions. PickMyCard’s example had a cap of 13,750 rupees, a minimum spend, excluded cards and reversal of reward points. Always read the terms at checkout, since they can differ by sale. Our own addition: check which payment methods qualify before you add the item to your cart, because the offer may not apply to every card or to UPI payments.

Is an exchange offer worth it?

This is general guidance. Compare the exchange value with what you could get by selling the device elsewhere, and check whether the value is guaranteed or depends on inspection. Also check whether it affects a minimum-spend threshold. Our own addition: ask the seller to confirm the value in writing or on the order page, and keep the old device safe until the exchange has been completed.

Is No Cost EMI really free?

I did not find a source on this, so compare totals yourself. Look at the EMI total against the one-time price and check for fees. Some discounts may apply only to full payments, as with the SBI debit card example from PickMyCard. Our own addition: read the instalment terms before paying, and avoid taking a loan for something you do not need, since festive offers are built to encourage spending.

Should I buy last year’s model?

It can be a good choice. CNET’s Russell Holly said older products typically get bigger markdowns. Check software support, warranty and whether the missing features matter to you, then compare the price history with the latest model. Our own addition: compare the specifications that matter for you, such as screen, battery and processor, and decide whether the saving is worth giving up newer features.

Decide Before You Browse

The best Diwali electronics deal is the one you planned for. A clear number, a price record and a close read of the card terms do more than any banner.

Write your top three items and their maximum prices today. When Diwali week arrives on 8 November, you can compare offers calmly and walk away from the ones that do not beat your number.
