Search Intent Types With Examples You Can Copy

Key takeaways

  • The four types are informational, navigational, commercial investigation and transactional.
  • Look at the current results to confirm intent: guides, product pages, tools or videos.
  • Many queries mix intents, so lead with the main need and cover the second.
  • Match the page format to the intent, and put the answer first.
  • Re-check intent periodically, because results change.

Semrush describes four main keyword intent types, navigational, informational, commercial and transactional, and notes that some keywords carry more than one. Its own example: “make coffee at home” is both informational and commercial.

Search intent is the reason behind a query. Getting it wrong is why well-written pages fail to rank: you answer a question nobody asked in that format. Clearscope, Semrush and Surfer all describe the same four categories. This guide gives each type with examples from Indian festival and finance topics, the page format that fits, and a title template you can copy. The method is to check the results page, not to guess.

The Four Search Intent Types

IntentThe searcher wants toExample queriesBest page format
InformationalLearn or find an answersharad purnima 2026 date, how much emergency fund do I needGuide, explainer, FAQ
NavigationalReach a specific site or pagestar health renewal, hdfc ergo renewalBrand or login page, clear nav
Commercial investigationCompare options before decidinggold etf vs physical gold, sip vs lumpsumComparison, review, best-of
TransactionalBuy or complete an actionbuy gold coin online, renew health insurance onlineProduct, pricing or checkout page

These examples come from the queries behind this batch: for instance, Mangools shows “star health insurance renewal” at about 37,000 monthly searches in India, which is mostly navigational and transactional, while “gold etf vs physical gold” is commercial investigation.

How to Check Intent Before You Write

  • Search the keyword and look at the first page of results.
  • Note the format: are the results guides, product pages, tools, videos or forums?
  • Read the features: answer boxes, People Also Ask, shopping results and maps show what Google thinks users want.
  • Check the headings of the top pages to see the sub-questions they cover.
  • Decide your angle: match the dominant intent, and add something the others lack.

Semrush notes that a keyword can show more than one intent, so a page can answer the main need and then support the secondary one. A “kheer recipe” page, for example, can include a short shopping list.

Title and Page Templates You Can Copy

IntentTitle templateFirst paragraph does this
Informational[Topic]: Date, Steps and Answers (2026)Gives the direct answer in one or two sentences
Navigational[Brand] [Action]: Official Link and StepsPoints to the official page, then explains the steps
Commercial[A] vs [B]: Which Is Better for [Goal]?States the verdict by case, then shows the comparison table
TransactionalBuy [Product]: Price, Options and How to OrderShows price, options and the next action

Keep the template honest: do not label a page “best” unless you compare options, and do not make a promise the page cannot keep.

Mixed Intent and Shifting Intent

When Intent Is Mixed

A query like “diwali puja muhurat” is informational and time-sensitive. A query like “diwali gifts” mixes information with shopping. Lead with the primary intent and include a clear path to the secondary one, such as a checklist or a product list.

When Intent Changes

Intent can shift with season and with search features. Re-check the results before each seasonal refresh. If you need help organising pages by intent, see our post on building a topical map and our AEO vs SEO guide.

Intent Map for This Batch of Posts

To see the idea in practice, here is how the topics in this batch map to intent. The classification is a judgement; check the live results for your own keywords.

TopicLikely intentPage format used
Sharad Purnima 2026 date and kheer recipeInformationalDate table, recipe, FAQ
Gold ETF vs physical goldCommercial investigationComparison tables, tax summary
Health insurance renewal checklistInformational with transactional pullChecklist, grace-period table
Diwali Lakshmi Puja muhuratInformational, time-sensitiveTime table, samagri list
Bhai Dooj gift ideasCommercial investigationBudget tiers, personality table
Search intent typesInformationalDefinitions, examples, templates

Use the same exercise on your next ten posts. It takes ten minutes and often reveals a page whose format does not match its keyword.

FAQs

What are the four types of search intent?

They are informational, where the user wants to learn; navigational, where the user wants to reach a specific site; commercial investigation, where the user compares options; and transactional, where the user wants to buy or act. Semrush and Clearscope describe the same four. Many keywords mix more than one, so check the live results before you decide. Naming the intent in your brief before writing is the simplest way to avoid a mismatch.

How do I find the search intent of a keyword?

Search the keyword and examine the first page of results. Note whether they are guides, product pages, comparisons or tools, and what features appear. Keyword tools may label intent, but the live results are the best check. Match your page type and angle to what ranks, and add something the existing pages lack, such as a clearer answer or better data. Repeat the check a few weeks later, because results can change as search features evolve.

What is an example of commercial investigation intent?

Queries such as “gold etf vs physical gold” or “best credit card for travel” show commercial investigation: the user is comparing options before deciding. The best page format is a comparison or review that explains differences, costs and who each option suits, with a clear conclusion and a table that lets readers scan the main points quickly. Adding a clear verdict by reader type makes comparison pages far more useful than a plain list.

Can a keyword have more than one intent?

Yes. Semrush gives “make coffee at home” as an example that is both informational and commercial. Lead with the primary intent and address the second with a short section or a link. The live results will show which intent Google favours, and which format the top pages use to satisfy both kinds of reader at the same time. This is why checking the live results beats guessing from the words alone.

Does search intent change over time?

It can. Results shift with seasons, news, new features and user behaviour. A festival query can move from information to shopping as the date approaches. Re-check the results before refreshing a page and adjust the format when the results change, so that the page continues to match what searchers actually want at that moment. Putting a reminder in your content calendar makes the intent check part of every refresh.

How does search intent affect my content?

It decides the format, the order and the first paragraph. If users want a quick answer, give it first. If they want a comparison, show a table. If they want to buy, show the price and the next step. A mismatch between intent and format is a common reason that well-written pages do not rank or convert as expected. The first paragraph is usually where the match or mismatch becomes obvious to the reader.

Write for the Reason Behind the Search

Search intent turns keyword lists into page decisions. For your next post, type the keyword into a search box, read the first page of results and write down the dominant intent in one word.

Then pick the matching template and make the first paragraph answer it.
