In India, Govardhan Puja falls on Tuesday, 10 November 2026, according to HinduTone and DekhoPanchang, while in the USA, UK, Canada and the UAE it falls a day earlier, on Monday, 9 November. The difference is not an error: it comes from the rule that the day must be observed on the Pratipada, the first lunar day of the bright half of Kartika, as it stands at local sunrise.
This guide to Govardhan Puja 2026 explains the date split, the story of Krishna and Govardhan Hill, what Annakut means and what to offer, including options for flats and families abroad. Dates and timings differ by city, so confirm with your local temple or a panchang for your location before you plan.
Govardhan Puja 2026 Date
Govardhan Puja is observed on the Pratipada, the first lunar day of the bright half of Kartika, the day after Diwali. In 2026 the Pratipada runs across two civil dates in many places, so the observed date depends on the sunrise rule in your location.
| Place | Govardhan Puja date | Bhai Dooj date |
|---|---|---|
| India | Tuesday, 10 November | Wednesday, 11 November |
| UAE | Monday, 9 November | Tuesday, 10 November |
| USA, UK and Canada | Monday, 9 November | Check your local panchang |
HinduTone lists Diwali as Sunday, 8 November and Dhanteras as Friday, 6 November in India. A Drik Panchang listing for Lancaster, California shows the Pratipada beginning at 11:01 PM on 8 November and ending at 12:30 AM on 10 November, with Govardhan Puja on Monday, 9 November. Other sources, including Zingbus, give slightly different Bhai Dooj dates, so check yours.
Why India and Abroad Differ
HinduTone explains that the UAE date, 9 November, comes from Drik Panchang, while India uses the local sunrise rule that places the Pratipada on 10 November. The Pratipada begins on 8 November night and continues into 10 November, so the day that holds it at sunrise differs by location.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Tithi | Pratipada, Kartika Shukla 1 |
| India rule | Observed on the day the tithi is present at sunrise (udaya tithi) |
| Result in India | Tuesday, 10 November |
| Result in UAE, USA, UK, Canada | Monday, 9 November |
If you live abroad and your family in India observes the festival a day later, both dates are valid for their own locations. Ask your temple which one it follows.
Puja Timing
DekhoPanchang gives sunrise and sunset times for Indian cities on 10 November but no fixed muhurat. Drik Panchang lists two windows for Lancaster, California on 9 November in US local time: 6:21 AM to 8:27 AM and 2:45 PM to 4:52 PM.
| City (10 November) | Sunrise | Sunset |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | 6:39 AM | 5:30 PM |
| Mumbai | 6:43 AM | 6:01 PM |
| Bangalore | 6:16 AM | 5:50 PM |
| Chennai | 6:05 AM | 5:39 PM |
| Kolkata | 5:45 AM | 4:54 PM |

Use these as a guide, and follow your family tradition or local priest for the exact time.
The Story of Govardhan Puja
In the story HinduTone retells, Krishna persuades the people of Vraj to honor Govardhan Hill, which provides grass and water for their cattle, instead of the god Indra. Angered, Indra sends a violent storm. Krishna lifts Govardhan Hill on his finger and shelters everyone beneath it until Indra relents.
Annakut, meaning mountain of food, recalls the feast the villagers prepared for the hill. The festival is also known as Diwali Padwa and Bali Pratipada in some regions, and Bestu Varas in Gujarat.
Annakut Offerings: What to Prepare
DekhoPanchang says Annakut is traditionally an offering of 56 varieties of dishes, including rice, dal, vegetables, sweets and savouries. Drik Panchang adds that the foods are typically wheat or rice cereals, gram-flour curry and leafy vegetables.
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Grains | Rice, wheat rotis, puris |
| Pulses and curries | Dal, kadhi, gram-flour curry |
| Vegetables | Seasonal mixed vegetables, leafy greens |
| Sweets | Kheer, halwa, laddoos |
| Savouries | Pakoras, namkeen |
Do not waste the food. DekhoPanchang advises sharing the prasad with neighbors and others after the puja.
Govardhan Puja in a Flat or Abroad
You do not need a courtyard. HinduTone suggests simple alternatives: a small hill made from wheat dough, a mound of rice or sweets, a rangoli of the hill and a parikrama around a tray instead of the real hill.
| Need | Option |
|---|---|
| No space for a hill | Wheat dough or rice mound on a thali |
| Parikrama | Walk around the tray |
| Decoration | Rangoli of Govardhan Hill |
| Open flames not allowed | Use electric diyas |
| Cooking time abroad | Cook on Sunday and do the puja in the evening |
Check building rules on diyas and incense, and ask your temple about its Annakut program if you would like to join a community event.
